Connecting Your ORCID Account
How to link your ORCID iD to AcaTrove and what data gets imported automatically.
Connecting Your ORCID Account
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is the standard persistent identifier used across scholarly publishing and funding systems. Connecting your ORCID iD to AcaTrove unlocks automatic data import and keeps your research profile synchronized with the global ORCID registry.
Why Connect ORCID?
Linking your ORCID account provides several advantages:
- Automatic publication import -- Your published works are pulled from your ORCID record, saving hours of manual entry.
- Grant and funding data -- Active and past grants listed on your ORCID profile are imported into AcaTrove's Grant tracking.
- Profile population -- Your name, affiliation, biography, and other profile fields are pre-filled from ORCID.
- Ongoing synchronization -- When you add new publications or grants to ORCID, they appear in AcaTrove automatically.
- Identity verification -- Your ORCID iD serves as a verified academic identifier, useful for collaboration requests and institutional reporting.
How to Connect ORCID
If You Signed Up with ORCID
Your ORCID account is already connected. Publications and profile data begin importing as soon as your account is created. You can check the import status from Settings > Integrations > ORCID.
If You Used Another Sign-Up Method
- Navigate to Settings > Integrations.
- Find the ORCID card and click Connect.
- You will be redirected to the ORCID authorization page. Sign in to your ORCID account if prompted.
- Review the permissions. AcaTrove requests read access to your public profile, publications, and funding records.
- Click Authorize to grant access.
- You will be returned to AcaTrove. The import process begins immediately.
What Gets Imported
When you connect ORCID, AcaTrove imports the following data:
Profile Information
- Name, biography, and keywords.
- Current and past institutional affiliations.
- Researcher URLs and external identifiers.
Publications
- All works listed on your ORCID record (journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, preprints, and more).
- Metadata including title, authors, journal, DOI, publication date, and abstract.
- Publications are added to your AcaTrove Publications list and are immediately available for AI features like Paper Chat and Multi-Doc Synthesis.
Grants and Funding
- Funding entries from your ORCID profile, including funder name, grant title, award amount (if available), and date range.
- These appear in your Career Hub for tracking and reporting.
Sync Settings
After connecting, you can configure how AcaTrove synchronizes with ORCID:
- Go to Settings > Integrations > ORCID.
- Under Sync Preferences, you can:
- Enable automatic sync -- AcaTrove checks for new ORCID entries periodically and imports them without manual intervention.
- Manual sync only -- Click Sync Now whenever you want to pull the latest data.
- Select data types -- Choose whether to sync publications, grants, or both.
Handling Duplicates
If you have already added publications to AcaTrove manually, the ORCID import uses DOI matching to detect duplicates. Matched publications are merged rather than duplicated, preserving any notes or tags you have already added.
If a publication cannot be matched by DOI (for example, because it lacks one), it will be imported as a new entry. You can merge duplicates manually from the Publications page.
Disconnecting ORCID
If you need to disconnect your ORCID account:
- Go to Settings > Integrations > ORCID.
- Click Disconnect.
- Previously imported data remains in AcaTrove but will no longer sync.
You can reconnect at any time by following the connection steps above.
Tips
- If you do not yet have an ORCID iD, you can create one for free at orcid.org/register. It takes about two minutes and is increasingly required by publishers and funders.
- Make sure your ORCID record is up to date before connecting. The more complete your ORCID profile, the richer your AcaTrove workspace will be from the start.
- Enable automatic sync so that new publications you add to ORCID (or that publishers push to ORCID on your behalf) appear in AcaTrove without any action on your part.
