Impact Tracking
How to track citations, impact metrics, and visibility for your publications in AcaTrove.
Impact Tracking
Understanding how your publications are received by the research community helps you make informed decisions about your research direction and career strategy. AcaTrove's impact tracking tools aggregate citation data and visibility metrics for your publications and present them in an accessible dashboard.
Impact Dashboard
The impact dashboard is accessible from the Publications section. It provides an overview of your publication portfolio's performance:
- Total citations -- The aggregate number of citations across all your publications.
- h-index -- Your h-index calculated from the publications in your AcaTrove library.
- Citation trend -- A chart showing your citation count over time, helping you identify growth patterns and the trajectory of your research impact.
- Top publications -- Your most-cited works, ranked by citation count.
The dashboard updates periodically as new citation data becomes available from external sources.
Per-Publication Metrics
Each publication record includes its own metrics section. Open any publication and scroll to the Impact panel to see:
- Citation count -- The number of times this work has been cited, sourced from academic databases.
- Citation history -- A timeline showing when citations occurred, which can reveal whether a paper's influence is growing, stable, or declining.
- Citing works -- A list of publications that cite this work. Click on any citing work to view its details, which can help you discover new research building on your findings.
- Altmetrics -- Where available, alternative impact indicators such as social media mentions, news coverage, policy document citations, and downloads.
How Citation Data Is Collected
AcaTrove retrieves citation data from external academic databases using the DOI or metadata associated with each publication. The data sources include major bibliometric indexes and open-access citation databases.
Citation counts are refreshed periodically. There may be a delay between when a citing paper is published and when AcaTrove reflects the new citation. If you notice a discrepancy between AcaTrove's count and another source (such as Google Scholar), the difference is typically due to indexing timing and database coverage.
Tracking Impact Over Time
The citation trend chart on your impact dashboard shows your aggregate citation count by year. This view is useful for:
- Identifying high-impact periods in your career.
- Assessing the long-term influence of specific publications.
- Preparing for reviews such as promotion cases or grant renewals, where demonstrating a trajectory of increasing impact is valuable.
You can filter the trend chart by date range, publication type, or specific publications to isolate particular dimensions of your impact.
Using Impact Data
Impact metrics integrate with other AcaTrove features:
- Career Hub -- Citation counts and h-index appear on your career profile and can be included in generated CVs.
- Grant Finder -- Your publication track record is a factor in match scoring for grant opportunities.
- Application Packets -- Impact summaries can be included in packets assembled through the Professional Assistant.
Tips
- Add DOIs to all your publications. DOI-based lookups produce the most accurate and complete citation data.
- Check your impact dashboard before grant applications or annual reviews. Having current metrics readily available saves time during reporting.
- Do not rely on citation counts as the sole measure of impact. Altmetrics and the citing works list provide a richer picture of how your research is being used.
- If a publication is missing citation data, verify that its DOI is correctly entered. A small typo in a DOI can prevent data retrieval.
