Department Chair Dashboard

The Department Chair dashboard provides an operational view of your department's research and administrative activity. It combines faculty output tracking, course assignment management, budget oversight, and hiring pipeline information in a single interface.

Dashboard Panels

Department Metrics

An aggregate view of your department's research performance. Metrics include total publications this year, active grants and their combined funding, conference presentations, and graduate student enrollment. A comparison with the same period last year helps you identify growth or decline in key areas.

Faculty Activity

A per-faculty summary showing each member's recent publications, active projects, current grant funding, and teaching load. Sort by any column to quickly identify who may need additional support or who has capacity for new initiatives. Click a faculty member's name to view their full profile and activity history.

Course Assignments

A table of current and upcoming semester course assignments. Each row shows the course number, title, assigned instructor, enrollment count, and schedule. Use this panel to spot unassigned sections, overloaded faculty, and scheduling conflicts.

Budget Overview

Your department's financial summary: total allocated budget, spent to date, encumbered amounts, and remaining balance. Line items are grouped by category (personnel, operations, equipment, travel) so you can track spending patterns. Grants and institutional funds are shown separately.

Hiring Pipeline

Tracks open faculty and staff searches in your department. Each entry shows the position title, search committee chair, current stage (Posting, Applications Under Review, Interviews, Offer, Filled), and target start date. This panel is particularly useful during recruitment season when multiple searches run simultaneously.

Recommended Workflows

  1. Semester planning -- At the start of each semester, review Course Assignments and Faculty Activity together. Balance teaching loads against research commitments.
  2. Monthly financial check -- Review Budget Overview to ensure spending is on track. Flag categories where spending significantly leads or lags the expected pace.
  3. Annual review preparation -- Use Department Metrics and Faculty Activity to compile data for annual performance reviews and departmental reports to the dean.

Tips

  • Export Faculty Activity as a spreadsheet for use in tenure and promotion dossiers.
  • Click any metric in the Department Metrics panel to drill down into the underlying data -- for example, clicking total publications shows a list of every paper with authors and journals.
  • Use the Hiring Pipeline alongside the budget to ensure new positions are financially viable before extending offers.
